  • Quick Access functions can be pinned to the Activities Bar
  • Bar can be placed at the top, bottom, or right of the screen (Settings > Display)
  • Supports "Always visible on right" or self-hiding mode — swipe from the edge over the indicator to open

New App Drawer (replaces Home Page)

The home page has been replaced by the App Drawer, a new way to launch and manage apps. Accessed via the HOME button.

  • New Split (+) button is now the first app, not the last
  • Dedicated Settings button (B) and panel layout edit button (C)
  • Dedicated button to add apps or splits to the Activities Bar (D)
  • Drag apps to reorder; hide/unhide individual apps
  • The top-position app will run automatically on startup

New Quick Access Menu

Replaces the previous swipe-down-from-top menu. Accessed via the round button on the Activities Bar, or a short press of the power key (two short presses if the bar is hidden). A third power-key press closes the menu.

  • More discoverable than the previous swipe gesture
  • Intuitive brightness slider
  • Ability to pin shortcuts (e.g. "Add Waypoint") to the Activities Bar
  • Function buttons can be pinned/unpinned from the Quick Access menu itself
Note: Power key brightness-increase shortcut has been replaced by automatic backlight adjustment (see below).

Automatic Backlight Adjustment on Startup

Addresses the issue of users starting their device with the screen dimmed from the night before, causing the display to appear unresponsive.

  • Startup check: System checks if brightness is at a very low level
  • Daylight detection: Uses GPS or internet time to determine if it is daytime
  • Auto-adjust to 50%: If starting during the day, brightness is automatically raised to 50%
  • Override option: A dialog lets users cancel the adjustment if preferred

Settings Access & Changes

  • Multiple paths to enter Settings: Activities Bar home key, Quick Access Menu, or Goto Settings
  • New X button to exit Settings more easily
  • Users can now specify the number of detected tanks — required for Yamaha® app tank display
  • Six-way split now available on NSS4 (previously max was four). NSX remains at four. NSO4 also supports six.

Light & Dark Theme

A choice of light or dark display theme is now available.

Path: Settings > Display > Default theme
Note: A restart of the unit may be required for all interface elements to update.

New Alerts System

Alerts have been completely redesigned to be clearer, more informative, and easier to act on.

  • Clear Headers: Straightforward title summarising the issue at a glance
  • Detailed Descriptions: Additional context explaining the cause of the alert
  • Relevant Data Values: Key data points displayed to aid troubleshooting

ActiveTarget® & ActiveTarget® 2 Support

Lowrance® ActiveTarget® and ActiveTarget® 2 modules are now supported, including the new ActiveTarget® 2 XL transducer with best-in-class resolution and the largest field of vision from a single transducer.

Once an ActiveTarget module is detected, the ActiveTarget app appears. A maximum of two modules are supported simultaneously.

Important: After updating the MFD to 2.5, also update the ActiveTarget module to version 26.2 (file: ActiveTarget-26.2-72.1.36-Standard-1.riw). Settings > General > Software Updates > Install now.

ActiveTarget® Modes

  • Scout Mode: Scan large areas for fish and structure; ideal for finding schooling fish
  • Forward Mode: View distance and depth of fish or structure ahead of the transducer
  • Down Mode: Pinpoint fish or structure directly below the transducer

Key settings across modes: Mode selection (or Auto), Range, Contrast, Noise Rejection, Color Palette, Screen Recording (.MP4 to SD card), Range Grid, Flip View, Mode Icon, Heading Offset.

StableView (Forward & Down) and Angle Offset are additional advanced options.

AT Wide (NSO4 & NSS4 Only)

When two ActiveTarget® 2 modules are detected, the AT Wide app appears for paired transducer views including Scout Wide, 180 View, and the industry-first Scout Live 360 view.

Only two ActiveTarget® 2 or two ActiveTarget® 2 XL transducers can be paired for AT Wide.

SideScan & DownScan™ — Scroll Speed Adjustment

Scroll speed of both SideScan and DownScan can now be adjusted to control how fast data moves across the screen.

Fixes & Improvements

Software Rollback

It is now possible to revert the software to an older version using an SD card.

  1. Edit the installer filename by adding .auto before the .upd extension — e.g. rename NSX-2.3.176.upd to NSX-2.3.176.auto.upd
  2. Copy to the root of a microSD card (no other updates on the card)
  3. Go to Settings > General > Software Updates
  4. Select "Install now" for the file indicated by the microSD card icon and follow on-screen instructions

CHIRP Improvements on Select AIRMAR® Transducers

Sensitivity and target return strength improvements when using AIRMAR® High Wide and Medium CHIRP transducers.

Update Instructions

Method 1 — Direct Internet (Wi-Fi / OTA)

Connect the NSX®/NSS®4 directly to the Internet. The MFD can download updates automatically. No SD card needed.

Important: Update file is over 1 GB. A robust Wi-Fi connection is required. Data charges may apply. Download can take up to 45 minutes. If interrupted, the download will resume when reconnected.
  1. Settings > General > Software Updates
  2. Auto download is enabled by default — when an update is available and connected, it will start automatically
  3. Select Wi-Fi Connection to initiate manually
  4. Follow on-screen instructions to install

Method 2 — SD Card / USB Drive

  1. Download the updater file from www.simrad-yachting.com
  2. Copy the .upd file to the root of a microSD card or USB drive (NSS4 / NSX 9" or 12")
  3. With the MFD powered on, insert the microSD card or USB drive
  4. An alert will notify you of the available update — press Update now, or go to Settings > General > Software Updates > Install Now
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions
macOS note: Ensure the .upd file is NOT unzipped by macOS. Disable auto-decompression in Safari Preferences > General, or use a utility like "The Unarchiver".

Method 3 — Simrad® Companion App

Create a Simrad account and register the NSX/NSS4 on the Companion app. When a new version is available, download it to your phone away from the boat, then transfer to the MFD when next on board.

After Updating

  • After running the system for 10 minutes, power off the vessel and wait at least 1 minute before repowering
  • Perform an Auto Source Selection: Settings > Boat Network > Sources > Auto detect all sources
  • Ensure the Setup Guide is complete: Settings > Setup Guide
  • Verify Boat / Vessel Settings: Settings > Your Vessel
Sonar source missing? Open the Sonar app menu and select the source list next to the play/pause button.
Digital depth showing --.-? Sonar may be paused. Go to Sonar app > Menu > Source Selection > PLAY button.
